As of June 29, 2025, the company holds a staggering 597,325 bitcoins, totalling roughly 3% of Bitcoin’s circulating supply.

This milestone reinforces MicroStrategy’s position as a key market player capable of influencing Bitcoin’s price direction and supply dynamics.

MicroStrategy Bitcoin Accumulation Strategy

MicroStrategy’s Bitcoin acquisition model is built around dollar-cost averaging (DCA), but its historical patterns reveal a pro-cyclical tilt. In bearish years like 2022, the firm added a modest 8,109 BTC.

However, this changed dramatically during more bullish cycles: 56,650 BTC were purchased in 2023, and a jaw-dropping 257,250 BTC in 2024 alone. The most recent addition of nearly 5,000 BTC comes amid a wave of positive sentiment in the market, signaling that MicroStrategy remains confident in the asset’s long-term value.

Market Impact and Centralization Debate

Owning 3% of all available bitcoin is not without controversy. On one hand, MicroStrategy’s aggressive strategy and public commitment to BTC have helped validate the asset class in traditional finance circles. On the other hand, critics argue that such concentrated holdings undermine Bitcoin’s foundational principle of decentralization.

MicroStrategy's BTC hoard has been largely financed through convertible notes and equity sales. This, in turn, may introduce upward volatility into the market, especially during periods of intense accumulation.

Institutional Ripple Effects

Since first entering the Bitcoin space in 2020 under the leadership of Executive Chairman Michael Saylor, MicroStrategy has played a major role in normalizing corporate and institutional BTC adoption. Its actions have inspired a new class of investors, from hedge funds to publicly traded companies, to consider Bitcoin as a treasury reserve asset.

The rise of spot Bitcoin ETFs and broader institutional interest is putting additional pressure on the asset’s limited supply.

With companies like MicroStrategy scooping up massive chunks of BTC, the competition for supply is intensifying, especially as demand from retail and institutional players continues to grow.
